Featured Member Spotlight: Dan Giroux – Discovering Creative Confidence Through Sculpting
Atelier students come from a wide range of backgrounds, each bringing their own perspective and experiences into the world of sculpting. Today, we’re featuring a monument builder who has long seen sculpting as the highest expression of his craft, yet for years, it felt just beyond his reach. Without formal training and with little time to pursue it, he once believed that sculpting required a natural talent he might not have.
Through the program, that perspective began to shift. Working at his own pace, he found a more open and less rigid approach to the process, one that made space for mistakes, exploration, and growth. A memorable moment came while creating a Greek mask, where a small adjustment in form revealed how subtle changes can completely transform expression.
Here’s a look at his progress through the Atelier program, where steady practice, observation, and a willingness to try have helped turn something once uncertain into something within reach.

Atelier foundational projects by Dan Giroux
Read on to hear how Dan Giroux experienced the Atelier program and how it shaped his approach to sculpting.
What first drew you to join the program, and where were you in your sculpting journey at the time?
As a monument builder, I considered sculpting the pinnacle of my profession. I never had any formal training in art nor could I find the time to pursue it. Secretly, I believed that sculpting required an innate ability. This class allowed me to work at my own pace and implied that I could learn.
What’s changed for you since then — in your sculpting or how you approach it?
The biggest change is that I'm no longer afraid to make an error or to look perfect. I make a conscious effort not to be so technical or literal anymore.
Was there a moment in the program that really stood out to you?

Portrait Study by Dan Giroux
Creating the Greek mask. I didn't get the tilt of the head quite right, but I realized my subject seemed more melancholy as a result. In addition, as I manipulated the shape of the mouth, I learned I could change the entire emotion...an epiphany.
What feels possible for you now that didn’t before?
Before this, I viewed sculpting as something beyond my reach. Now, I realize through observation, and the courage of not being afraid to fail, that my limits are my imagination.
